I had the exact problem when i installed slackware 9.0.  Well, i think i had
the same problem.  what i did was went into the /etc/X11/XF86Config   opened
that file with vi, had to make it executable first, and then went down to
where the video card section was, and changed the two spots where it says
driver to "vesa".  first you might want to run the command xf86config.  This
will set up your video card and monitor for you.  but if that doenst work,
then try the config file.  and, you might not have the latest version of
XFree86, which i dont and still need to get around to but im still weary of
the compiling process.  anyway, hope this helps.
