[Newlug] mounting network shares

What should I do to enable mounting network shares.  For example.  I have my 
home directory on my Linux server and I want to mount that in a directory in 
my home directory on my Linux client.  Do I need to use NFS?  If so, do I 
need to setup an NIS server as well?  Do I need to put a record in the 
/etc/exports file on the server?  How do I mount the drive that I'm trying to 
share?  So many questions, so much confusion.

I'm also trying to decide which desktop I like better, Mandrake or SuSE - 
argh.
