[Newlug] sendmail - SMTP AUTH

I am trying to set sendmail up so that it sends email via my internet access
(DHCP). Earthlink blocks all SMTP traffic not utilizing SMTP AUTH due to
spamming.
I have sendmail compiled with PLAIN AUTH but still have errors with
/etc/sasldb permission denied.
Looked at all the documentation but have not had success.
Anybody here tried this and had success ?
