[Newlug] new domain name for newlug

Good thoughts, Josh.
Does anyone have the contact information for the leader of the FVNUG group?
I'd like to contact them about how we could setup a more formal structure.
We need a process for handling decisions like these. While ideas coming
from the group (via emails, etc.) are good - we need a way to come together
& decide on things, otherwise it just end in further indecision.
If someone could please put me in touch with the FVNUG group, I will speak
with them. In the mean time - we can discuss some of these things at this
week's meeting. I will send out the meeting announcement tonight.
Ryan

for the most part I've tried to stay out of this whole issue that's been
brewing these past few months, but this is getting absurd. As those that
have been on the list for a few years have probably come to realize every
couple of years the members of the group end up infighting tearing the list
apart, putting it in to an even more inactive state, and generally leaving
the meetings abandoned. Why do I bring this up? Because clearly people
either were not around or have forgotten those times and those who forget
history are doomed to repeat it.
Firstly, there's no real reason to move the mailing list. The needs of the
list haven't changed, there have been no problems with the upkeep of the
list. It's a pretty hands off thing that has worked without fail for years.
Not to say that having a secondary backup of the archive and possibly even a
ready to go mailing list set up should the need arise but this definately
falls under the case of if it's not broke don't fix it.
Secondly, the topic of the webstie. Yes, it hasn't been updated in a while.
Yes, I can understand people thinking the control of the domain should be in
the hands of someone that is active among the list. That said, what are the
issues with where it's at now? Before moving servers perhaps it should be
seen if someone who wants to take a more active role in administering the
site can get the rights to modify where it's at. If the concern is of an
outdated website, personally, I'd like to see what a person intends to do
with the website before rash decisions are made to move it and end up in the
situation. Anyone could set up a domain or subdomain somewhere to do this.
It could probably be done without any hassle as a subdomain off the
newlug.org domain.
Thirdly, the issue of what to host it on. As I mentioned before there's no
real reason to move the site right now before the other options are
explored, but in that scenario, for as low a traffic site as this is there
is no reason to move it to a dedicated server. A VPS would do just fine and
at a substantially cheaper rate. Not to mention that I'm sure any number of
members of this list would be willing to donate space/time to handle this.
Fourthly, in an attempt to stop this endless cycle of infighting this list
really needs a more formal structure, as others have mentioned. If you want
to see how much this can help just look at any of the other user groups in
the area. For example, take a look at what many would consider the arch
nemesis of this group, FVNUG. Organized, incoming funds, presentations,
etc. If this list ever hopes to attain anything more than what it is now
this is really the direction that the group needs to head. Anyone could ask
any of the other groups for tips on how to go about organizing a group more
formally. In fact, the Agile development group might not be a bad one for
those interested to investigate as they are just getting off the ground (one
meeting held, 50ish people in attendance) and is going about setting up a
formal structure and all of that.
At any rate I could easily keep going on about this topic, but as I'm not
longer exactly an active member of the group, no attend meetings it's not
really my place. This will be the last I speak on this subject. Whatever
happens, happens, but those that are calling for change seriously think
about the possibilities first, because right now it's just seemingly a
battle for control.
