Group Members,
I would very much love to do any web work, seeing that is what I do as a
profession, to help out. I could probably donate some web space too.
Thanks,

Hello All.
Greetings to you. I'd like to take the time to summarize the discussion
that occurred during the most recent meeting on October 8th regarding the
direction and future of NEWLUG.
Recently, there has been some discord on the mailing list regarding the
recent direction of NEWLUG in regards to its (lack of) focus on Linux and
Open Source during presentations and meetings, perhaps brought on by
suggesting that NEWLUG host a Microsoft Rep to talk about Windows 7 in a
sales presentation-type atmosphere. Regardless of what make the conflict
surface, there has been a small divide brewing for several years, and this
most recent development has served as a catalyst to allow us to discuss the
real issues. They are:
- Who are we?
- What kind of group are we?
- What type of events do we wish to have? ( Linux Advocacy? Social?
Presentation/Informative? Action-based? Job Networking? Installfests?
Swap
meets? )
- Who is our audience?
- What subject matter is appropriate for this group?
- Where should we be meeting?
- When should we be meeting?
- Who determines the answers to these questions?
We all agreed that discussing these issues is about as fun as sitting down
with our girlfriends/wives/significant others and having the long, drawn-out
discussions "about our relationship". Nonetheless, it is a conversation
that needed to happen.
These questions led us to several conclusions:
- Without a leadership structure, it is difficult to maintain the focus
of the subject matter of NEWLUG, and lacking Linux-related subject
matter,
the group has welcomed presentations on a variety of different subjects,
including programming and software development, business process
management,
virtualization, web hosting, as well as Linux-based topics such as my
presentation on Suse Studio.
- NEWLUG is the NorthEast Wisconsin Linux Users Group. Due to our
geographical area having a smaller population of geeks and technology
experts compared to, say, San Francisco, Portland, or Madison, a variety
of
technology-savvy, intelligent people who have different areas of focus
(Solaris, Novell, Cisco networking, Java and other programming languages)
have chosen to attend this group out of a combination of interest for the
subject matter and desire to interact with other tech geeks in NorthEast
Wisconsin. We are technology experts that enjoy sharing information with
each other. We like pizza. We dislike fluff presentations that gloss
over
the deficiencies of software and software platforms in favor of "rah rah"
pep rally style. We are not interested in salespeople using our group to
pitch things to us. We are interested in gaining information from this
group that we can apply both on our home AND work computers, however many
there may be.
- The focus of NEWLUG meetings is on Linux, and Linux related topics.
Lacking Linux-related subject matter, we welcome discussions on other
technology and technology-related issues, with preference given to
matters
that are more closely related to Linux and Open Source.
- Our audience is Linux users and technology experts in the area that are
interested in gaining more knowledge as well as sharing their knowledge
with
others.
- We wish to have a variety of events. The "Second Thursday of the
Month" meetings/presentations have been pretty well attended for quite
some
time, but there may be an unmet need of Linux users and technology
experts
who are unable to meet at this time or are more interested in different
types of events, or meeting at different times. We, as a group, need to
get
better at planning events in advance, sharing that information, and
discussing our opinions on the events that occur in this group.
- A variety of other tech groups in North East Wisconsin exist
(NEWNET<http://mydigitechnician.blogspot.com/>,
Web920 <http://web920.com/>,
AITP<http://www.aitp.org/organization/chapters/chapterhome.jsp?chapter=5158&
monthSubtract=9&year=2009>,
NEWNUG<http://www.novell.com/communities/node/2532/newnug+northeast+wisconsi
n+novell+users+group>,
etc.) but people keep coming to NEWLUG. We must be doing something that
is
encouraging people to come. Should we be doing more to encourage
different
user groups to attend our meetings, or collaborate with other related
groups
for events?
- Our web presence is in need of an update. The people that regularly
attend meetings don't have as much access to the website and NEWLUG
mailing
list as they would like. There is not a clear structure to determine who
has control of (or editing access to) the website and mailing list.
- What NEWLUG needs is more input from its members. NEWLUG members need
to feel empowered to participate in their own group! Be Open Source! Be
a
presenter! Suggest an event!
I think everyone will agree that this note has gone on far too long, but I
will bring forth the following suggestion-* NEWLUG should elect some sort
of leadership to help clearly indicate responsiblity for the planning and
content of NEWLUG meetings and events. *It doesn't need to be super-formal,
but it would benefit the group when disputes arise about these (and other)
matters. I suggest having a President and Vice President (or Ninja/Assisant
Ninja, or whatever title you prefer), each being elected for a year-long
term. Top vote-getter is president, second vote-getter is Vice President.
If no one wishes to accept this responsibility, I will volunteer to take on
this role. I would also like to nominate Ryan Hatch, as he has been
instrumental in planning many of the meetings over the past year or so.
It would be nice to also have an (un)official archivist and/or webmaster to
be responsible for sharing information about the topics of interest and
information referred to during presentations and events. I say this in
appreciation to the current maintainers of the website and mailing list.
Thank you for volunteering this service. Creating this position (or
positions) will allow for volunteers for new hosts/maintainers to come out
of the woodwork if they are passionate about it, or simply allow us to
clearly define a service that is already being dutifully performed.
In the near future, you will see another message that contains a link to a
"SurveyMonkey" survey about NEWLUG. Please fill out the survey. Feedback
is good. The results of the survey will be shared at the next meeting that
I am able to attend, or, if people prefer, I can post the results online or
in another email.
Notes from the NEWLUG 10/8/09 discussion were typed by Tom Scott. I have a
copy of those notes if anyone would like them.
Thank you for reading.
Sincerely,
Ross Larson

P. S. I'd like to have an Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" installfest when the OS
if officially released on October 29th. I welcome suggestions on where to
hold this event. Send me an email if you are interested in attending, as
this would not be held at the usual place or time. Even if this will only
be an installfest of one, I'll still have a good time, but I welcome the
company.

There seemed to be some interest in gpxe.
gpxe is an enhanced version of intel pxe that is used for network booting.
They added http, iscsi and aoe.
Even with out the enhancements works better than pxe.
http://etherboot.org/wiki/index.php
I was thinking one could show one of the recorded presentations on
etherboot.org. Probably the newest one

If everone watches it maybe no point :-)
Then give a demonstration.
Thinking of at least some sort of iscsi boot.
